Along and to the west of I-65 lies Mobile’s busiest thoroughfare, featuring neighborhoods, colleges, shops and restaurants. West Mobile is home to a large portion of Mobile’s population and holds appeal for college students and families alike thanks to the variety of housing offered by one of the largest cities in the state of Alabama.
West Mobile’s main artery, Airport Boulevard, and its service roads provide access to several shopping centers, including The Shoppes at Bel Air, the oldest continuously operating enclosed regional mall in Alabama, and Springdale Mall. In addition to the large anchor stores at the Shoppes, including Belk, Dillard’s, Target and JCPenney, and the options at Springdale Mall, including Shoe Station, World Market and Bed, Bath & Beyond, Airport Boulevard also sports a variety of other chain stores, including Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, The Fresh Market and many others. Interspersed between the stores are local dining options like 7 Spice and The Boiling Pot and chains like Walk-On’s, Olive Garden, O’Charley’s and others.
Not far from the hustle and bustle are residential areas ranging from starter homes to multimillion-dollar estates. Main residential areas in west Mobile include Country Club Estates, Jackson Heights, Pinehurst, Wynnfield, Dawes Lake, Heron Lakes and Ridgelawn. Country Club Estates and Ridgelawn are in the popular residential areas of Spring Hill, a popular community in West Mobile. In Springhill, you can grab a coffee at Carpe Diem Coffee & Tea Company for lunch, eat dinner at the Dumbwaiter or grab groceries at Rouse’s Market on the way home. The Spring Hill area is home to Spring Hill College, Alabama’s oldest institution of higher learning, founded in 1830.
Spring Hill is just one of several colleges in the area, including the University of Mobile, Bishop State Community College, Auburn University’s Harrison School of Pharmacy - Mobile Campus and the University of South Alabama. South, as it’s known locally, is home to nearly 15,000 students and more than 100 academic programs. The area surrounding University Boulevard offers affordable housing and rentals for those who call West Mobile home.
